Waffles and More!

Waffles are one of those types of food that can be used for any meal, whether it is Breakfast, A Holiday Brunch, Lunch, Snacks or Dinner.  They may be used as an entrée, a bread course, a snack or dessert.

Today there are many different types of waffle irons available that make it easy to be creative with your meals.  There is the plain old fashioned type of waffle iron, the Belgian Waffle Iron which makes waffles that were originally called Brussels Waffles.  When the Brussels Waffle Maker was showcased at the World’s Fair in Flushing Meadows New York, the name was changed to Belgian Waffle Iron because it was thought that many people in the United States did not know where Brussels was.

There is a Mickey Mouse Waffle Iron, in fact there are two.  There is one with a large Mickey Waffle and another with four small Mickey Waffles.  There used to be a heart-shaped waffle iron made by Villa Ware called the Five of Hearts.  Some of these Waffle Irons may not be manufactured anymore, but there are lots of them for sale on E-Bay and other on-line sites.

For Brunch you could have a waffle bar.  If you are fortunate enough to have more than one type of waffle iron, you could have waffle irons set up at strategic points along with toppings and side dishes that go with them.  Waffles would also be a fun type of food for children’s parties.  If you have the Mickey Waffle Iron, you could do a party with a Disney Theme.  There is also a Mickey/Minnie Croque Monsieur (grilled sandwiches) which can also double as a waffle iron.

For Breakfast or Brunch there could be waffles with fruit toppings and bacon and sausage sides.  For lunch you could make cornmeal waffles or a nacho cheese topping or you could have cheese waffles with an ala king topping.  Add a salad and dessert to these and you have a complete meal.

For dessert waffles there are chocolate waffles that make great Hot Fudge Sundaes with Vanilla Ice Cream and Hot Fudge Sauce.  Take any fruit topping and add it to a basic waffle and voila, you have dessert.  The same basic waffle and fruit toppings are also great for breakfast or brunch.  For waffle and topping recipes please visit our Recipe Section.  If you cannot find the waffle iron you would like to have, try an on-line auction or retailer.  One last hint, if you make more waffles than are eaten in one sitting, wrap them tightly in plastic wrap, freeze and then just reheat in the toaster or toaster oven when you are ready to eat them.
